Pandiya Naatu Divya Desangal

Pandya country poses to be the most richest and colourful region of south India when it comes to temples, history and culture. Of the 108 shrines sanctified by the azhwars, 18 grand temple complexes are within the Pandya country. 

This series will be a 10 day itinerary where we will transport you to the 18 Divya Desams in the historically rich and culturally vibrant Pandya Region.

Sangam Saga - Exploring Sangam Works

Tamil sangam anthologies are one of the finest literary productions from ancinet times. Widely believed to have been authored by poets between 4th century BCE to 3rd century CE, these works refelect the scoeity that it was then. These songs speaks volumes about the society, kingship, economy, culture and beliefs. Dwelving deep into these anthologies for the beauty of the language, richness of the culture and some interesting anecdotes from history is the objective of this series. Interest in learning is the only prerequisite.

Art & Architecture of Srirangam

Srirangam, a temple so unique in several aspects stands tall narrating the history of south India in total. Understanding the story of this temple town, temple and the deity and the art and architectural galore helps us appreciate the temple better when we go there next. The reasons behind these festivals and why and when they are celebrated shall be discussed too. This shall be a perfect introduction to a more detailed 10 day series on this temple scheduled for the future.

Murti Tatva - Iconography of Devi Part - 2

Sept 4 & Sept 5, 2021

In continuation to our first part of the same series, we explore more on the group deities seen in Devi worship. Sapta Matruka, Ashta Matruka, Nava Durga, Dasa Mahavidya, Thithi Nithya Devi are some of the deities that will be discussed in this part. Most of these deities are not popular in common worship and hence needs a deep understanding of puranas that speaks about them. Their attributes are quite unique to the common murtis. The puranic attributes, ritual protocols, some popular shrines for these deities are topics that will be covered apart from their iconography .

Mural Painting Traditions in Tamil Nadu

Aug 16 - Aug 20, 2021

The 5 day program intends to introduce these topics timeline wise starting from the rock art paintings of prehistoric times in Tamil Nadu, to the bright murals of the Pallavas, the superior story telling technology of the Cholas through paintings, the grand and long running panels by the Vijayanagara and Nayak kings and the Maratta paintings with generous Victorian influence.

Padal Petra Sthalangal - Pandya Nadu

July 19 - July 30, 2021

This webinar aims at understanding a general history of Pandya country and these temples individually. Religious history, art and architecture, sacred literature, epigraphy and popular festivals celebrated there are a few aspects that will be covered in this 10-day series. Traditional rendering of tirumurai-s is also being included for a holistic experience of the registrants.

Murti Tatva - Iconography of Devi

July 3 & July 4, 2021

With its roots in the prehistoric past, worship of sakti as Devi has several layers to understand it in total. From natural elements that nourish us to the warrior Goddesses it’s all personified into feminine forms. Understanding the growth of Devi worship system through rituals, traditions and icons in worship enhances one's understanding of the ancient tradition. From prehistoric proto types to Durga, Kali and a few other ancient but common forms shall be covered in the first part of this series.

The Pandya's - History, Arts & Culture

The first episode of Know Our Kingdoms webinar series gave us an opportunity to discuss about the Pallava empire and their contributions towards the history of South India. Next in line is the ancient kingdom of the Pandya's. This series aims at understanding the empire through different phases of the time line in history. 10 days, 10 topics to get an over all introduction to the legacy of Pandyas is the primary objective of this series.

The proposed session (Part 2 of Shiva's Iconography) will elaborate these attributes and explain in detail the iconography of Dakshinamurti, Kalyanasundara, Kalasamhara, Bhairava, Veerabadhra and Tripurasamharam . Corresponding puranas, texts from agamic scriptures and stapatya works shall be used to understand the said forms better.

The vast Chola empire that extended beyond the Indian peninsula, accommodated local existing traditions in temple construction wherever they went. This series scheduled once in two months shall explore lesser known Chola temples around south India. We are starting with the northern districts of TN.
