For Dr. Madhusudhanan Kalaichelvan, a temple is both a work of architecture and a living archive - of inscriptions, poetry, music, ritual and the communities that sustain it. An architect, conservation specialist and scholar, he brings these strands together through research, teaching, writing and journeys into the field.

A postgraduate gold medallist with a doctorate in Temple Town Planning, he is Professor of Saiva Siddhanta at Sri Dharumapuram Adheenam and a member of the Academic Council of the Tamil Nadu Dr. J. Jayalalithaa Music and Fine Arts University. His interests span temple architecture, iconography, epigraphy, Tamil literature, sacred geography and living religious traditions.

Through RATHAM - Road Access to Temples, Heritage And Monuments - he curates heritage experiences that connect close observation of monuments with the texts and traditions that illuminate them. His illustrated lectures in Tamil and English make scholarly ideas accessible to audiences in India and abroad. His writing includes columns on epigraphy, temples, archaeology and culture in The New Indian Express.

​His contributions to scholarship, cultural preservation and the study of Saiva traditions have earned him ten honours between 2018 and 2026. He was the youngest recipient of the Vedavalli Memorial Award (2018) and the first recipient of the Prof Swaminathan Award (2020), recognising his exceptional contribution towards understanding and preservation of Indian Culture. Dharumapuram Aadheenam appointed him Adheena Pulavar (Asthana Vidwan) in 2023. His honours also include Saiva Siddantha Ratnakaram and Yuva Sahithyakar Samman (2024), Gurugnana Sambandhar Award and Saiva Siddantha GnanaRatnam (2025), and the Baskara Sethupathi Award from Madurai Adheenam (2026).
